Dr. Maya Angelou

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

The first time I read this poem was in elementary school after watching the movie and reading the book of the same name based on Dr. Angelou’s biography. I was fascinated by it all. I watched and read, in awe, as young Maya survived struggle after struggle. She triumphed, she sang her song, her song was heard. She is no longer caged. She is free, and her “songs” will live on forever.

Rest in peace Dr. Angelou.

Met Gala Murders

I was slayed several times from all of the fabulousness from last night’s Met Gala. This year’s theme was “White Tie” in honor of Charles James, a British fashion designer known as America’s first couturier.” I drooled at post after post of everyone’s favorite look in my Instagram time line. I agreed with most but a few stood out more than others. Here are the looks that gave me life.
