Gingham Everywhere

Hi people, it’s NikkiSimone here. I occasionally scroll popular online stores to gather inspiration.  In my most recent scroll, I noticed a trend for spring that stood out. GINGHAM! Usually, when I think of gingham, I think of tablecloths and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. I’ve never thought it could become a trendy pattern. I was inspired! I took a trip to the fabric store the very next day and got to work. I came up with three pieces that will fit right in with the pieces from those online retailers, at half the price.
This first piece was made from a very small black and white gingham. I thought it would work well with this bold black and white striped full maxi that I also made. I added the pleather jacket for some edge.
This top was made from a medium black and white gingham. It’s very on trend for spring with the ruffles on the sleeves. I kept it simple with black skinny trousers and a block heel sandal.
This skirt is my favorite piece. I had a vision and struggled a bit to bring ot to life. Lots of trial and error to get just the right look. I wanted an edgy look so I paired it with a band tee, denim jacket, and over the knee boots.

Thank you so much for stopping by. Tell me about some of the trends you’re looking foward to rocking this spring. Feel free to share. Until next time,

The Time I Got Tatted

Hey guys, its Nikki Simone here. I recently turned the big 32. In an effort to make this an amazing and unforgettable year, I promised myself I would do some things I’ve always wanted to try. I will be sharing some of those experiences here on the blog.

First up, henna tattoo!

I love it. It’s so artistic and creative. I’m looking forward to sharing more experiences here. Until next time, Nikki Simone.

Switching It Up

Hello all, and hello fall! It’s Nikki Simone here. Can you guess my favorite thing about fall? No, not the cooler weather. No, not the changing leaves, although they are purrty. It’s the FASHION. Fall fashion is just everything, the layers, the scarves, the boots, the coats, the beanies! I’m all about that hipster life.

I decided to take a few items of clothing, from basic to extreme, mix and match them, and come up with several different looks that can work with fall.

First up is a basic white tee. I started out in a white tee, green skinny pants, an anorak jacket, and black beanie.

Next, I ditched the anorak jacket an threw on a faux fur vest. Still simple, just a touch of edge.

After that I switched to a denim button up. I tied it in the front, an threw on my favorite gold necklace. I loooove this necklace. I basically wear it with everything.

I kept the denim shirt and changed into a pleather circle skirt, accompanied by a pair of knee socks. I’m so extra. The shirt can be worn open, giving a little cholo action, or tied in the front.

I switched back into the white tee and faux fur vest combo. This time I tied the tee up in the front. I clearly have a thing for tying up shirts. It just reduces the bulk of otherwise loose fitting pieces.

White shirt comes back off and I switch to a basic black long sleeve tee. All black eeerrrthang.

Off comes the pleather skirt and I throw on a black mini skirt, add the vest and my beanie for some edge.

And lastly I throw a printed peplum blazer on top of the black tee and mini skirt. Trying to class it up a bit to finish it all off. I kept on the knee high socks and combat boots though. I mean, I still have to be me right?

I hope you enjoyed these random fall looks. I definitely enjoyed coming up with them. There’s a list of the items I’m wearing and where I got them down below.

Summer Trends 2014

Hey people, it’s Nikki Simone here and I present to you my favorite trends of Summer 2014.

First up is Lovely Lace. You can keep it simple in white or nude, or make a statement with bold colors. You can even use this trend to accessorize, whether it’s a lace handbag, shoe, or bangle.

Next up is Awesomely Athletic. There’s an array of joggers available to help you work this trend. Denim, leather, floral, etc. Throw on a cropped football jersey, a leather baseball cap, and a pair of sneakers and you’re all set.

The third trend is the Flawless Full Skirt. I don’t know what it is about a full skirt that makes you want to twirl on a mountain like Maria in The Sound of Music. You can go mini or midi. Solid, printed, or even sheer. Pair it with some killer shoes and knock them dead.

Fourth is Gorgeous Geometric. (I’m reaching with that alliteration huh?) This trend is everywhere. You can find pieces to rock from head to toe. My favorite expression of the geometric trend is the use of tribal and African inspired prints.

Last but not least is Magnificent Mesh. You can go full on mesh like the blazer shown below, or wear pieces with small mesh insets. Either way is sexy and adds a touch of edge to your wardrobe.

That’s all for now guys. What are some your favorite trends of the season? Comment down below. As always thanks for reading and until next time, Nikki Simone.

Do I post her too much? Oh well. You can’t help who you love.

Have you ever seen an outfit that just speaks to you? I swear this one said “Hi there Nikki. You love me don’t you? You need me in your life.” I couldn’t find info on this outfit anywhere so I am going to attempt to sew it myself, with my own two hands. I’m so nervous. *Crosses fingers* Wish me luck. Once I’m done, I’ll share whether I fail or prevail!

Dr. Maya Angelou

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Maya Angelou
The first time I read this poem was in elementary school after watching the movie and reading the book of the same name based on Dr. Angelou’s biography. I was fascinated by it all. I watched and read, in awe, as young Maya survived struggle after struggle. She triumphed, she sang her song, her song was heard. She is no longer caged. She is free, and her “songs” will live on forever.

Rest in peace Dr. Angelou.

So Fetch

Hey there, NikkiSimone here. 10 years ago today the movie Mean Girls was released. Who would’ve thought it would still be relevant and quoted on a daily basis. In honor of the movie I wanted to share with you a few of my favorite quotes and scenes that still crack me up.

Thanks for visting, until next time, NikkiSimone
